Alex Roland's "A Centrifugal Maelstrom?", Tuesday, February 25, 1-2:30 EST
Please join us on Tuesday, February 25, from 1-2:30 eastern standard time, for a discussion of Alex Roland's "A Centrifugal Maelstrom?", his Da Vinci Award address recently published in Technology and Culture (and linked below).
Prof. Roland delivered the address when he accepted the 2023 Da Vinci Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society for the History of Technology. In it he gives a fascinating account of how a career in military history turned out to be something much larger, and uses his career reflections to open a discussion of the meanings and uses of the term "technology". He has become concerned with many ways in which this term, central to the field, has come to be used, and wonders how the field might come to redefine or reconsider it. Does the center no longer hold? The paper is linked below.
