Decolonising the Excavations at Jebel Moya

Join Isabelle Vella Gregory as she explores Jebel Moya, an archaeological site in the southern Gezira Plain in Sudan, first excavated by Henry Wellcome between 1911 and 1914. This talk will use the archives at Wellcome Collection to explore Henry Wellcome’s work, its aftermath and the current project and excavations, which were resumed in 2017.

You will learn about how the archives show the legacies of imperialism and power imbalances, and how this helped the current Jebel Moya project pursue a different strategy, involving more collaboration with Sudanese stakeholders. Isabelle will share the key findings of the project, including information on population health and movement, and the research questions excavations can answer.

The presentation includes some photographs of excavated human remains.
