Online Event

Join the APS and learn about Philadelphia’s 1793 yellow fever epidemic via our now virtual lesson, “A Malignant Tale.” APS educators will provide details on the historical background of our lesson, the primary sources used, and take you through the virtual lesson itself. This lesson was created for students in grades 5 through 8 and has content that deals with death, race, and medicine. We’ve been incorporating trauma aware and trauma informed approaches into this lesson, come learn with us and share your own tips!

During this workshop, take part in the “Malignant Tale” at home or in the classroom and learn how Caspar Wistar Haines and his family experienced the yellow fever epidemic in 1793. Discover the role of the Free African Society in taking care of Philadelphians during this time of need and the sacrifices they made. Learn about the need of essential workers and how people dealt with an epidemic in 1793.
