Development of Computing in the former USSR involves the history of science, folklore, politics, and totalitarian regime. One can say that it reflects the history of the communist word. Indeed, several scientists independently worked on creating first Soviet computers, and secrecy surrounding research often lead to parallel studies, and lack of recognition. Electronic computing began in 1940s in the USSR, in strict secrecy, while "Cybernetics" was officially denounced. We will present the overview of the development of the Soviet and Russian computer science, and the ideological struggles surrounding mathematical logic, computability, and informatics.
