Professor Nick Wilding will present a talk about his recent work recognizing a copy of Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius as a forgery. It had been authenticated in 2011 by a team of experts as Galileo's autograph proof copy, and valued at $10M.


Nick Wilding is Assistant Professor in Early Modern History at Georgia State University. He works on seventeenth-century natural philosophy, and has published articles on Galileo, Hooke and Kircher. He has held fellowships at Cambridge, Stanford, Columbia and the American Academy in Rome, and is a Mellon Fellow in Critical Bibliography at the Rare Book School, University of Virginia.


Wilding's book, Galileo's Idol: Gianfrancesco Sagredo and the Republic of Knowledge is under contract with Chicago University Press. Sponsored by Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries.
