The 2023 Hughes Prize for an accessible book in the history of science is awarded to Keith Wailoo for the book Pushing Cool. Big Tobacco, Racial Marketing, and the Untold Story of the Menthol Cigarette. - Learn more about the story of menthol cigarettes’ targeted marketing in African American communities with its underlying enmeshment of racial exploitation and corporate interests, which had catastrophic consequences for public health in the United States. 

 

In this lecture, chaired by Mary Augusta Brazelton, author and Henry Putnam University Professor of History and Public Affairs Keith Wailoo will introduce the key topics of the award-winning book and discuss how the tobacco industry's disturbingly powerful narrative has endured to this day.
