Dr. Ronald Smeltzer will be presenting on his research regarding Emilie Du Châtelet,a notable French mathematician and scientist during the Enlightenment best known for her translation of Newton's works as well as her affair with Voltaire. Based upon her publications and manuscripts from the speaker’s collection, the presentation weaves a story of deep human interest with a history of an 18th-century woman's struggle to be acknowledged in the scientific community.
