Mark Schiefsky is a classicist, historian of medicine, science, and philosophy, and Director of Harvard University’s Center for Hellenistic Studies in Washington, DC. He is the translator of the Hippocratic text, On Ancient Medicine, and the author of dozens of articles related to Greco-Roman antiquity. Dr. Schiefsky’s most recent work considers the reception of ancient Greek philosophy and science, particularly in the Arabic-speaking world but also in the Renaissance. His talk at Cedars-Sinai will discuss the different meanings of techne, “art” or “expertise” in ancient medicine.
