The American Institute of Physics has two open opportunities that are ideal for PhD students and postdocs working anywhere in the world in the history of the physical sciences.
- Grant-in-aid program has an impending application deadline on November 15
- Early-Career Conference, taking place in Salvador, Brazil next August, has an extended call-for-papers deadline of December 1.
The grant-in-aid program provides grants of up to $2,500 each that are paid on a reimbursement basis. Submission deadlines are April 15 and November 15 each year. Grants are typically used for travel to archives and to conduct oral histories, but may be used for other research purposes. Though open to anyone working in the field, this is a particularly excellent opportunity for PhD students to gain experience in proposing a project for funding. Application instructions and newly updated guidance for proposing successful projects are available here: https://www.aip.org/history-programs/physics-history/grants
The Early-Career Conference generally takes place every other year and brings together a global community of scholars working in the history of the physical sciences. In 2025, we will be meeting August 4-9 in Salvador, Brazil, hosted by our historian colleagues at the physics institute at the Federal University of Bahia. Travel assistance will be available.
