The Currency of the Cell: Energy, Metabolism, and Life in Twentieth-Century Biochemistry

Wednesday June 15 at 3:00 PM

This talk traces the history of ATP from its isolation in 1929 to its establishment as the universal energy "currency" of the cell in the latter decades of the twentieth century. In detailing shifting understandings of the biological role of ATP, the talk explores ATP's impact on intermediary metabolism research. It argues that biological energy researchers made cyclical energy transformations the foundation of cellular biochemistry by constructing ATP as a critical link between anabolic and catabolic intermediary metabolism.
