The Committee of Medical Research (CMR) of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) sponsored research projects at teaching hospitals and universities across the United States. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), the Pennsylvania Hospital, and Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia were just a few of the several sites studying the treatment of severe burns and the support of burn patients beyond their initial injury. Despite state of the art equipment, dedicated space and a dedicated, hand-picked nursing staff, the OSRD-funded burn project struggled to accumulate good data. Other groups, such as the physicians associated with the Boston City Hospital and Massachusetts General were able to capitalize on industrial accidents and tragedies such as the November 1942 Cocoanut Grove Fire and accrue hundreds of patients. This talk will examine the strategies used by the OSRD burn research group to conduct their work and discuss the challenges facing physicians and nurses providing patient care in the midst of this war work.
