Abstract: The history of African American and Cherokee nurses in Appalachia 1900-1965 has received scant scholarly attention. In fact, many people are not aware that there are people of color in Appalachia. Knowing about these courageous and unsung nurses adds a piece to the incomplete jigsaw puzzle of nursing history. By increasing our understanding of the history of Appalachian African American and Eastern Band Cherokee Indian nurses and the environment they lived and worked in, we can provide more culturally competent care.
