Images are critically important to science education. From historic lantern slides to YouTube videos, visual media have a unique way of engaging people and revealing unknown aspects of our world. As a provider of free science education since 1855, the Wagner has used its share of visual science education tools throughout the years. At this lecture, feast your eyes on selections from our lantern slide collection and the wider world of scientific cinema while learning how important visual aids are in teaching science. Speaker Oliver Gaycken is Associate Professor in the Department of English and core faculty in the Film Studies and Comparative Literature Programs at the University of Maryland, College Park. His book “Devices of Curiosity: Early Cinema and Popular Science,” was published in 2015. Our Annual Member Reception will follow the talk; free for Wagner members, $10 for non-members.
