Malaria and the Political Ecology of Development in Twentieth-century South Asia
The project examines archival holdings at the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Wellcome Collection to analyze the connections between the developmental aspiration of the burgeoning Indian nation state, vitally assisted by US donations, and the rise of the insecticide-resistant strain of malaria in the wake of the so called “green revolution.” Located at the intersections of medical, environmental, agrarian, and cultural histories, the project stakes its claim towards sustainability in global public health policy.
