The Center proudly announces the publication of North by Degree: New Perspectives on Arctic Exploration, edited by Susan A. Kaplan and Robert McCracken Peck by the American Philosophical Society (Lightning Rod Press, volume 8, 2013). This is the first book that has resulted from a conference jointly hosted by the Center. This conference was cosponsored with The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, The American Philosophical Society and The Peary-MacMilan Artic Museum and Artic Studies Center (Bowdoin College). Held in May 2008, scholars from various disciplines including English, art history, anthropology, history, ethnohistory and Native American Studies presented papers examining the social, cultural, technological and environmental setting in which exploration endeavors were carried out. This International Conference on Arctic Exploration honored the 100th anniversary of Robert E. Peary’s historic 1908-1909 North Pole Expedition with papers focusing on the period from 1850 to 1940.
